Appledore Book Festival Writing Competition 2020 Results
Firstly, a huge thank you to The Bideford Bridge Rotary Club, who donated a generous £450 so that the competition could run, and to David Ellis and Alfred Lees who gave their time to judging.
Congratulations to all those who entered the competition last year. There were 55 entries in all, ranging from age 5 to 18.
Of course things were different this year; many entries came during the first lockdown when students were at home so we were really pleased and impressed to receive such a wide spectrum of creativity. Many chose to write on the given topic - 'Things were different back then' - but many submitted their own titles, in either poetry or prose.
We had serious, thought-provoking work on the changes wrought by the pandemic through to modern mythology, creative flights of fancy and expressions of sheer joy in response to personal reading. We were especially enchanted by our Key Stage One graphic response to ‘Oi Frog’. It certainly made us want to go straight out and read it!
Key Stage 2 presented us with a very hard job in judging the winner this year with so many fascinating entries. Many writers were Highly Commended.
Key Stage 3 also presented its challenges with high levels of creativity and content, marred only by a fairly frequent avalanche of adjectives where one well-chosen one would do!
Book tokens were sent to the schools and this year we left it to schools to arrange their own presentations, rather than the usual Rotary presentations. Congratulations to all our winners and runners up. Data protection does not permit names to be published.
