About Us

Appledore Book Festival is a charity and was founded in 2006 by Nick Arnold, author of Horrible Science. Nick directed the first ever book festival in a bid to raise money to save Appledore Library and he has remained as our Schools Patron ever since. Nick’s campaign brought our community together, saving the library which is still at the heart of our village today and the Book Festival continued on as an independent event.

We continue to promote the use of our libraries, staging many of the festival events in Appledore library and hosting events in other North Devon libraries as part of the Schools Outreach Programme. But our festival has become so much more. Now in its 10th year, it is run almost exclusively by a team of volunteers who work tirelessly to host over 60 Book Festival events in Appledore and over 30 author visits to schools and libraries in North Devon during a 15 day period. Our aim is a simple one: to increase the enjoyment of reading and encourage creative writing through providing access to inspirational events. Last year we sold over 5k tickets and reached over 4k children in North Devon Schools.

We couldn’t have achieved this without all of our supporters. We are especially grateful to our Patrons Jeremy Vine, Judi Spiers and Nick Arnold who continue to give their valuable time to guide us and promote what we do. Their commitment helps us to attract the quality events that we are able to stage for our supporters. We are really looking forward to welcoming everyone back to Appledore for this year’s event.
